We are recruiting on behalf of a private international charitable foundation dedicated to environmental recovery, cultural preservation, and economic sustainability, all under their “breathe freely” ethos. The foundation supports initiatives that heal the climate, biodiversity, and human cultural relationships with nature. Headquartered in a Hong Kong family office, the foundation has personnel in Hong Kong, the UK, Cameroon, Brazil, Australia, Papua, and the US. The selected candidate can choose to work from the UK or Hong Kong, with visa sponsorship available if needed.
About the Role
Position: International Accountant
Salary: £90,000.00 – £97,000.00 per year
Job Type: Full Time
Location: Remote (UK & Hong Kong)
This newly created position will report to the Director of Operations, managing the general ledger, financial records, and supporting financial planning and forecasting.
Main Responsibilities
International Accounting Operations:
- Develop a General Ledger Chart of Accounts to support current and future operations, ensuring compliance with IFRS for regulatory and audit purposes.
- Implement and optimize the Chart of Accounts and related processes, including interfacing with existing systems (HRIS, Payroll, Grants Management System, etc.).
- Ensure timely and accurate verification and recording of financial operations, including investment portfolios, international payroll, benefits, and taxes.
- Collaborate with the Human Relations Specialist on payroll and benefits administration.
- Work with senior management to establish optimal expense review and approval processes.
- Audit corporate credit cards.
- Identify and meet institutional and global reporting needs.
Budgeting and Financial Planning:
- Assist in preparing annual organizational and departmental budgets.
- Monitor and report on budget performance quarterly, working to minimize variances.
- Support financial planning and forecasting, including scenario development for growth.
Cash Flow Management:
- Reconcile projected expenses and cash flow, coordinating with the family office for financial decisions.
- Maintain and improve policies for accounts payable, expense reports, travel guidelines, and time reporting.
Regulatory and Audit Compliance:
- Strengthen financial systems integrity and controls according to IFRS and regulatory requirements.
- Build systems for accurate data provision for annual audits and tax filings.
- Ensure compliance with international tax, payroll, and documentation requirements.
General and Other Duties:
- Manage relationships with accounting service providers, auditors, and tax experts.
- Maintain an asset inventory and support MRI/PRI activities.
- Improve internal financial processes continuously.
- Potentially manage banking relationships and international payment systems.
- Perform other duties as needed, in line with the accountant’s role and experience.
Qualifications
Required:
- Several years of professional experience in international accounting, ideally in an international organization or auditing/tax consulting.
- Experience in philanthropy or non-profit accounting.
- Knowledge of multiple tax jurisdictions and multi-currency environments.
- In-depth knowledge of IFRS.
- Proficiency in web-based accounting systems (current platform is Xero) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work effectively in complex, matrixed environments.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Cross-cultural understanding and ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
Desired:
- Experience with international non-profit organizations or grantmaking foundations.
- Fluency in a second language (preferably French, Portuguese, Bahasa, Thai, Lao, or Burmese).
- Experience living or working in the Global South.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive attitude and sense of humor.
- Legal ability to work in the UK or Hong Kong.
