Many people dream of buying a house in rural Tuscany, but the high cost of real estate in the region can be a significant barrier. However, a new initiative could make this dream more attainable.
Tuscany’s regional authorities have introduced a scheme offering up to €30,000 for people willing to relocate to mountain towns with declining populations.
How to Receive €30,000 to Move to Tuscany
Rural towns and villages across Italy are facing a population crisis as residents migrate to cities in search of better job opportunities. This shift leaves small communities with abandoned houses and stagnant economies. To address this, local councils have devised various solutions, including selling properties for as little as €1.
In a similar vein, Tuscany’s authorities have launched the “Residency in the Mountains 2024” scheme. This program offers between €10,000 and €30,000 to individuals who purchase a house in one of Tuscany’s mountain towns with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. Currently, there are 119 such towns in Tuscany.
The financial aid can cover up to 50% of the property’s purchase and renovation costs. Stefania Saccardi, Tuscany’s regional vice president, highlighted the appeal of these areas, stating, “The Tuscan mountains are territories of unique beauty with villages to be rediscovered which, however, suffer from depopulation. Deciding to live in one of these municipalities is therefore a challenge and an opportunity, especially for young people, and the chance for a new life choice.”
Eligibility Criteria for the Grant
To apply for this grant, certain conditions must be met. Applicants need to be either Italian citizens, citizens of another European Union state, or non-EU citizens with a residence permit valid for at least 10 years. Additionally, applicants must already be registered as residents in an Italian town or city but should not currently reside in a mountain community as defined by the Italian National Institute of Statistics.
Applications can be submitted online via the Tuscany Region website. The deadline for submission is 1 pm CET on 27 July.
This initiative provides a unique opportunity for those looking to embrace a new lifestyle in the picturesque mountain towns of Tuscany while also contributing to the revitalization of these communities.
